THE CATEGORIES

• Makeover Expert
  • Photos to be judged on how dramatically the model’s look is improved, as well as being contemporary and demonstrating professional hair and make-up application. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” shot and two (2) “after” looks; one close up and one full length fashion shot.

• ColorAmerica Colorist of the Year
  • Photos to be judged on the application of the latest in fashionable hair color techniques. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” photo and two (2) “after” images showing hair color to the models best advantage.

• Hair Fashion Visionary – Avant Garde
  • Photos to be judged on the innovation, imagination and progressive talent displayed on one model. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” photo and two (2) “after” images showcasing the style from various angles.

• Texture Champion
  • Photos will be judged on expertise in cutting and styling of textured and/or multicultural hair. Techniques can include innovative perming, texturing and styling. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” photo and two (2) “after” images  showcasing style from various angles.

• Day to Night
  • Photos will be judged on looks styled down for daytime wear then restyled into a glamorous up do.  Entrants must provide one (1) “before” image and (1) “after” daytime style photo and one (1) photo of the same model with hair in a finished up do look for evening.

• Men’s Look Champion
  • Photos will be judged on contemporary and fashionable looks for today’s man. Barbers are also eligible for this award. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” photo and two (2) “after” images showcasing style from various angles.

• International Nail Technician of the Year
  • Photos will be judged on creativity and technical merit in natural or nail enhancement work. Entrants must present two (2) images showcasing the model’s full hand.

• RISING Star of ABS 2013
  • Photos to be judged on how dramatically the model’s look is improved, as well as being contemporary and demonstrating professional hair and make-up application. Entrants must provide one (1) “before” shot and two (2) “after” looks.  Category open only to students currently enrolled in an accredited cosmetology school.

• THE ULTIMATE STARS AWARD
  • In addition to winners in each separate category, one entrant among the STARS entrants will be awarded $1000 and the Leo Passage Gold Trophy, honoring the late founder of Pivot Point International. This special trophy will be presented to the professional with entries in three or more of the professional STARS hairstyling categories. The scores earned by each entry will be combined to determine the overall Gold Trophy winner.

Professional Categories
One winner in each of the professional categories above will receive:

• A trophy from Cosmetologists Chicago
• Recognition on stage during the BeautyBASH on March 9, 2013
• Recognition in major industry and consumer media for the work and the winner.
• One (1) Double Occupancy Hotel Room for Saturday, March 9, 2013, Compliments of Cosmetologists Chicago

Students (RISING Star) One Winner.  Three Runners- Up!

• Trophy presented during the ABS Student Conference on Monday, March 11, 2013.

ENTRY FEES (PER CATEGORY) - Professional
    $75 for Cosmetologists Chicago Members
    $125 for non-members of Cosmetologists Chicago

ENTRY FEES  - Student
    $25 for Cosmetologists Chicago Student Members
    $55 for student non-members of Cosmetologists Chicago

THE JUDGING:
A select panel of industry leaders will be the final judges.
The STARS photo entries are judged on:

• Technical merit, execution and suitability of the styles for each category
• Concept and overall approach
• Fit of model and style to the overall concept
• Effectiveness of the concept
• Blend of photo execution with stylist’s creativity
• Art direction and photo composition

THE PRESENTATION:
The STARS winners and their work will be introduced to the media and hundreds of their peers on The Runway stage at America’s Beauty Show during the fabulous ABS BeautyBASH party on Saturday, March 9th, 2013. Winners will be notified in February of 2013.

QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY

• The STARS categories are open to all salon professionals licensed for more than three years. 
• The RISING Star of ABS 2013 category is open to students currently enrolled in an accredited cosmetology school.

COMPETITION RULES

1.    STARS competition is open ONLY to licensed cosmetologists and barbers.  Cosmetology students are eligible to enter the RISING Stars category.

2.    A brief career resume and a high-resolution photo of the entrant must accompany every entry.

3.    Review each category description for details on specific images to submit as they differ by category.

4.    Entry forms must be fully completed.

5.    Entries submitted that have been photographed for or used in an advertising campaign will be disqualified.

6.    The images may be in color or black & white (except ColorAmerica Colorist of the Year which must be in 4 color)

IMAGE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

• •Submit ONLY electronic files, saved as jpg at 300dpi or higher.
• Entry materials will NOT be returned and become the property of Cosmetologists Chicago.
• Full wigs CANNOT be used. Partial wigs and extensions are permitted.
• All submitted images must be exclusive to the STARS Photo Competition.
• Minor digital enhancements including color correction, burning, cropping or dodging are acceptable in all categories.
• Image manipulation of content is only acceptable in the Hair Fashion Visionary category.
