Nicky Prosseda - AKA Nicky the Barba - has been a serious student of Cosmetology and Men’s

Grooming for over 21 years. He developed an appreciation for barbering from his neighbor, Carl, who cut hair on the front porch of his Philadelphia neighborhood home. Carl gave Nicky his first pair of clippers at the age of 12 and mentored him through those first dozen or so cuts.

From that point on it was off to the races for this young barber.

One of Nicky’s good friends got him an interview with the Trolio family who ran a successful salon in Blue Bell, PA, 20 miles up the Blue Route from his Philadelphia hometown. The road wasn’t easy as he began his first formal job in the Salon business as a shampoo boy. Over the next four years, Nicky worked long hours, first completing his chores for the salon, then spending as much time as anyone would give him learning everything he could about every aspect of the salon business. He was determined to work harder and smarter than anyone else

in the business. During his time at the Trolio family shop Nicky looked for other opportunities beyond his current mentors to continue his learning. His research into Cosmetology and Barbering Schools led him to enroll in classes outside the salon. He studied under accomplished stylists with Sassoon and Toni & Guy where he focused on and honed his scissor skills.But it was his time with Bumble & Bumble where he expanded his skill set well beyond the latest techniques and trends in male and female hair cutting. Nicky’s enthusiasm and thirst for

learning led him to dive into topics like leadership, public speaking and techniques for building a commanding stage presence, that built the foundation for his goal of owning his own shop. It was in 2008 that Nicky got an opportunity to open his first shop. From the very beginning,

Nicky’s mission was to bring back the lost art of barbering. He hired his first barber and began to create an atmosphere and culture where men and their sons can experience the camaraderie that was present in the old time shops where grandfathers, fathers and sons got their hair cut.

Nicky has grown Modern Male Barber Shop into a place for the modern man with the treasured values of the old America. In his shops, he teaches barbers to be role models for young men and men of all ages. Through his Barber Apprentice Program, he trains and develops men to become gentlemen barbers who contribute to the community and give back so others can succeed. After all, a haircut lasts two to three weeks. But when you teach a young man respect,

that lasts a lifetime.

   

 Lawrence Funk

Lawrence Funk aka Lawrence The Barber has always

had a fascination for cutting hair. At the age of 10, he began giving himself haircuts. Impressed with his look, Lawrence’s friends began requesting he cut their hair. His interest in making people look and feel good eventually led to a career in barbering. While in college, Lawrence began customizing his own hair clippers, which eventually led to the founding of Funk’s Custom Clippers. After college, Lawrence pursued

other avenues in the barbering industry in hopes that he

could land a career in a shop that embodied traditional

barbering, with modern style. While working downtown

Chicago Lawrence realized the art of classic barbering

techniques had become obsolete. He wanted to

differentiate himself from what barbering had become, and bring back the traditional style of barbershops from the1920’s. Inspired, Lawrence set out to make waves in  the barbering industry by reinstating longstanding traditions and opening his own shop; Funk’s Barbershop.


 

Mitchel Wilson

Mitchel Wilson aka “The Voodoo Barber” is one of the most passionate Barbers in the industry. Starting his professional career in 1999, his punk rock roots, and affection for the traditional barber profession’s historical lineage, eventually led him to Layrite. Knowing the true path to success is through education, Mitchel recently developed Layrite’s esteemed modern traditional barbering education curriculum. In 2016 he led Layrite’s Band of Barbers on their break-through inaugural educational tour. Currently he is overseeing Layrite’s education, managing the Band of Barbers, and working side by side with Layrite founder Donnie Hawley on Barbering education innovation. Addicted to the tonsorial arts, he cuts hair at American Barbershop in Santa Ana. His free time is devoted to family and music. 


   Patrick McIvor  

Patrick McIvor has been referred to as a “Tech Titan” and “The Social Media Mentor” by Salon Today; On Paper highlighted him in “Social Climbing – How to Make the Most of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and more;” Estetica called him, “…perhaps the best known media whiz” and Modern Salon, BTC, Launchpad and countless other media outlets feature his social media tips and tricks to help salons “Take Back their Social Networks.”

 

As one of the most respected colorists in the industry, McIvor was the founding Color Director for Nick Arrojo and Rodney Cutler at Arrojo Cutler Salon on 57th Street in NYC and has now rejoined Nick Arrojo as Brand Strategist and Techni-Color Director at ARROJO. He is a cultural junkie inspired by international cosmopolitan influences from fashion and global trends to technology. Specializing in social media and salonable haircolor, McIvor creates new experiential educational formats that highlight technology with technique and culture (TEC-HNI-Culture) in the ideas he shares with stylists on how to build their businesses and take back their social networks by celebrating THEM. He is founder of HI :) Media Solutions (a subsidiary of Patrick McIvor Color Studio, Inc.), which offers private and customized consultations to salon professionals on how to utilize social media to build business and go viral. McIvor has over 29 years of professional experience as Color Director, International Haircolor Educator,

Misseri’s thirst for knowledge and devotion to quality inform his approach to all his work. Whether styling hair, photographing editorial, art directing shoots and shows, or teaching and mentoring the next generation of great stylists, Misseri’s goal is to raise the bar, elevate the work, and exceed all expectations. That’s why he founded Kaizen Education, a company focused on teaching up-and-coming stylists everything they don’t learn in school that will get them to the next level in their careers. And that’s why he hand-picked a team of dedicated, passionate individuals as committed as he is to giving back and advancing the profession. 

Originally from Cleveland, Misseri attended Brown Aveda Institutes, earning top honors and shattering the school’s record for retail sales. After he graduated, he enrolled at Vidal Sassoon to learn different approaches and hone his skills, while at the same time apprenticing under Holly Brown and Stephen Moody—two stylists whose tough mentorship, disciplined mentalities, thoughtful styling, and client-centered service elevated Misseri’s technique and informed his approach.

When Misseri began styling for Ladies & Gentlemen, an Aveda salon in Cleveland, he quickly rose to the top of the roster. After just one year, the owners approached him about opening a new salon in Chicago. Beginning as a stylist, Misseri soon became Artistic Director of Ladies & Gentlemen Salon Chicago, where he created a singular and distinctive salon experience for his clients: a tranquil, spa-like, luxurious getaway where every desire is anticipated, every need is attended to, and every expectation is exceeded. Now the Creative Director of all Ladies & Gentlemen Salons and the Brown Aveda Institutes, Misseri has become known for his thoughtful, honest approach. Misseri’s service is based in his understanding that it is better to talk less and listen more—his observant nature and exacting standards lead him to always do what is best for his clients.  

Misseri has led hair design for Chicago Fashion Week 2014 and Latino Fashion Week Chicago 2013, and has styled backstage at New York Fashion Week with the likes of Christian Siriano, Porsche Designs, Kimberly Ovitz, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Ann Yee. He was named one of the top 30 colorists under 30 in the U.S. in 2014, and has won numerous awards, such as Estetica's Choice Men’s Hairstylist of the Year (2013) and NAHA Newcomer of the Year (2012). He was recently named the Big Shot Creative Colorist of the Year for North America at the Behind the Chair One Shot Awards and is a nine-time NAHA finalist in four categories since 2012, including being a three-time finalist for Hairdresser of the Year. Misseri has also been up for many international awards such as International Hairstylist of the year for the Irish Hairdressing awards, Best Mens Image for the Alternative Hairdressing awards as well as the only American to be nominated, and many more.


 

Stephen Adams

 
 

Stephen Adams is a positive and innovative problem solver, who has participated in many aspects within the beauty industry for the last 25 years. Through out the years he has been inspired deeply by the cultures of his surroundings. Art, humor, and clothing styles kindle his imagination and helps him see the world in a different aspect of texture, density, color and movement. Stephen feels that through his working with hair, a 3 dimensional fluid object that he sculpts and intensifies with color, he is able to create that perfect balance of both Art and Science. Stephen has and remains in all aspects of this industry including salon owner, educator, and artistic leader at Moxie Hair Salon. Stephen founded Moxie Hair Salon in Minneapolis in 1999 and opened a second location in St. Paul in 2005. These Salons have developed a reputation as one of the most popular top end salons in the Twin Cities. In 2012 He started a distribution center of tools for hairdressers. and in 2014 he joined and co formed the BCEAssociation, a not for profit education association for beauty industry in the state of Minnesota. His commitment to education, community, and his industry is what pushes him to be the best of his abilities. His growing national reputation stems from his work as a platform artist for companies such as Aveda, John Paul Mitchell Systems, and ARROJO. “Take Risks” has been Stephen’s motto for most of his life and he truly believes that to be successful at whatever we do, we all must have some “Moxie” and do what no one else has done.


 

Giovanni Giuntoli

 
 

Giovanni Giuntoli began his career as a hair artist in Chicago. He moved to New York to further his career and passion for editorial hair styling. He can be now be found on-set styling for top consumer and industry magazines such as GQ, and Glamour. Shooting ad campaigns and lookbooks for cutting edge designers including Armani, Chris Benz, Maybelline plus a celebrity list of Josh Groban, Ben Stiler, Lauren Conrad and Molly Sims. When it comes to trend setting, Giuntoli is always found backstage at New York Fashion Week creating the runway looks both leading and supporting the hair team at shows such as Michael Kors, Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson, Oscar De LA Renta, Cynthia Rowley, Carmen Marc Valvo, Tory Burch and more. In the Bridal arena, Giovanni is the go-to name for lead hair during NYC Bridal Fashion Week at Amsale, Kenneth Pool, Christos, and Hayley Paige show season after season, and additionally is considered Redken’s Bridal Expert, and also serves as Redken’s Expert for stories in top consumer bridal magazines such as Brides, NYBrides, and Martha Stewart Weddings. Giuntoli started Tearsheet to expand his brand and change the way education is offered in the industry. The Tearsheet brand of immersion style education has now expanded into a professional tool line used on photo sets, and in the hands of celebrity hairstylists. Giovanni’s prime role as Tearsheet's Artistic Director includes facilitating classes to industry professionals at every level all over the world. His experience has led him to the creation of

workshops, where he and his team train fellow professionals in the art of editorial styling to propel them to the highest levels of editorial, fashion, beauty and trend – whether in the salon or on set. Wahl Education & Artistic Team member Miguel Rosas is comfortable with competition, challenges, and media exposure.  He is the winner of numerous competitions, his first in 2011 where he won 3rd place at the Wahl National Cutting Competition and most recently the 2015 Champions Belt from Cedric’s Barber Battle. Miguel’s mastery for portrait cutting has earned him recognition by Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arietta for cutting his image into a young fan’s head prior to the 2015 playoffs and also a lifetime of free Kentucky Fried Chicken for cutting Colonel Sanders on a child’s head of an employee.  With a keen business mind, Miguel owns The New Style Barber Shop in Moline, IL and his passion for education is taking him down the path of establishing a barber school.   Attending the Illinois, QC, Barber and Hairstyling College in Moline, Il while still in high school and cutting his friends and family’s hair from the age of 13 is testimony to Miguel’s drive for success.  Since the beginning of his professional career, Miguel has aspired to be a platform artist and educator.  Miguel has found his home with Wahl and will continue to strive with excellence in his profession.

A believer of professional diversity, Kristi Faulkner is passionate about Multicultural education. Kristi specializes in custom design parts, precision bald fades, tapers, and women’s tailored haircuts. In 2014 Kristi traveled to Brazil where she shared the American Barbering techniques with our Wahl community and you’ve seen Kristi on the cover of Barbers Only magazine where she was featured in the ‘Back to School’ issue, 2010.  Whether on stage demonstrating her talents at the Premier Hair Shows in Orlando and Birmingham, Bronner Brothers Show in Atlanta, Sport Clips National Huddle; or if you’ve had the privilege of attending one of Kristi’s specialized classes, you will always leave rejuvenated and recharged and full of new knowledge. Kristi’s involvement with new product development and testing is a valued asset to Wahl’s Education and Artistic Team.

Today Candy runs three companies. Nicole graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelors in Marketing and International Business and a Masters in Business Administration with specialty in Finance and Entrepreneurship. Her education also included a background in biology, chemistry, medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy.

In 2007, after being exposed to the growing problems of the fledgling industry of eyelash extensions, Nicole set course and led the effort to develop a high quality product line. After 2 years of perfecting the product line, the company was launched in 2009. Nicole’s hard work paid off as the company gained a loyal following of stylists from all around the Globe and its much coveted adhesive is considered to be the best on the market.

In 2011 the company’s flagship Salon Lashe was established in Chicago’s Gold Coast for the purpose of offering high quality eyelash extensions to clients as well as providing a suitable training venue for stylists who want to learn The Lashe Technique.

With a full line of eyelash adhesives and extensions as well as a functioning salon in place, Nicole turned her attention to the launching of eyelash extension courses. It is her goal to properly educate and train as many stylists as she can and to instill in them the same kind of passion and drive that she has.

By 2013, the product line and services expanded to include Nicole's interest in an adhesive formulation for eyebrow extensions. She has put together a team of educators who have taken courses from world renowned brow stylists and have begun teaching brow restoration, shaping and eyebrow extension courses. This new service comes with the reward of helping cancer and alopecia patients and survivors.

Shelly Swift, a second generation hair designer, started her career at Phillip Pelusi Salon in Pittsburgh, PA. Being a senior stylist, and given her love of the industry and desire to expand her knowledge, she decided to learn the intricacy of hair replacement.

After meeting Dr. Matt Leavitt, D.O., Shelly relocated to Orlando, FL where she studied hair loss, hair replacement, and hair transplant surgery with some of the best medical professionals in the industry. Shelly and Dr. Leavitt founded Medical Hair Restoration in 1990, which became one of the largest medical hair transplant companies in the country with both domestic and international patients.

With over 30 years of experience in the beauty and hair industry, Shelly has been involved with some of the country’s finest and most elegant salons, as well as working alongside some of the greatest medical surgeons in the industry. In 2006 Shelly went on to launch Imagine Hair, LLC and Lush Lash, LLC a unique salon dedicated to exceptional hair replacements, hair extensions and eyelash extensions.

Having teamed up with Salon Lashe, Shelly continues to research new product lines and educational offerings to expand her knowledge and skill and to improve the quality and service she offers to her clients. Shelly is equally comfortable in a salon, surgical or educational setting, conducting seminars and classes. She greatly enjoys conveying her knowledge to other people.

Vicki’s educational experience includes MBA, business management, BSc. in Podology, advanced skin care, advanced foot care, infection control and business modalities in the salon industry. As a past business owner of both a clinical salon and a day spa, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her classes and seminars.

Vicki is an International Educator and trainer with Footlogix and NASP as well as a platform speaker at international trade shows. In this new era of salons and spas, Vicki believes education is the key to continued success. Her mission is to provide high quality education to the pedicurist and salon professional and help raise awareness in terms of safe pedicures and salon services.

Vicki is currently the President of the North American School of Podology and Vice President Education for Footlogix®. She is active on industry advisory boards, contributes to articles in industry magazines and writes a blog for the North American School of Podology.

Soon after, he started practicing the craft of hairdressing.  While the majority of his time has been spent in Chicago, Andreas has worked and trained throughout the country, as well as in Paris, London and Athens.  He has been recognized by national and local publications as one of the top cutters in the country and received the exclusive Salon Global Business Award for his savvy entrepreneurial skills. He serves on the Board of Directors of the most prestigious organization in the beauty industry, Intercoiffure.

Andreas was recognized in 50 Hairstylists, a book by Rick Morton that explores the success secrets of 50 of the world’s top hairdressers, salon owners, and colorists.

Karen Gordon is the owner of J. Gordon Designs. She has been a licensed cosmetologist for 35 years and is also a Hair Color Specialist. Karen has a Master’s Degree in Applied Business from De Paul University. She is an active member of Cosmetologists Chicago. She serves on many committees, including the Scholarship Committee and Education Committee. She is a four-time recipient of the Presidents Scholarship Award, four-time winning photographer of the Stars Competition and is the co-director of CC’s Photo Trend Release. Karen lectures on business development, hair loss and is also a member of Intercoiffure America/Canada.

Susan Schmaling



Susanne is one of the skin gurus of the esthetics profession, a licensed esthetician and beauty therapist with over 17 years’ experience. She is a popular presenter at conferences and seminars and has educated internationally, as well as the author of two books in Milady’s Aesthetician Series: The Comprehensive Guide to Equipment (2008) and Aging Skin (2011),also a contributor to Milady’s Professional Makeup-Aging Skin (2012).

 

Her clients have been from the highly visible red carpet crowd to those just starting to take care of their skin. Susanne’s expertise is integrative esthetics with an emphasis on science based therapies that provide measurable results. She is director of education for Associated Skincare Professionals and is working with leaders in the aesthetic medical, legislative, and skin care profession to raise the standards of education for licensed professionals.

Lydia Sarfati is the Founder and CEO of Repêchage, the first company to bring seaweed-based skincare treatments and cosmetics to the U.S market. Ms. Sarfati is an international industry leader and the developer of the world-renowned Repêchage® Four Layer Facial®, what Cosmopolitan UK has called "the best facial of the century." Today, together with her husband David Sarfati, Co-Founder and COO, Sarfati oversees a 50,000 square foot manufacturing, research, development and training facility in Secaucus, NJ. Vegan and natural-based, all Repêchage professional products and treatments are made in the United States, and are sold in over 40 countries worldwide. 

 

Lydia was born in Legnica, Poland, a city close to the Czech and German borders.  Her mother was captured in Russia and sent to a German labor camp and her Polish father was a survivor of the Holocaust.  In the late 1960's when there was renewed anti-Semitism in Poland, Lydia's family was forced to flee, first to Italy, ultimately settling in the United States.  She began her career in beauty as a makeup artist, custom-blending cosmetics in a Madison Avenue salon in New York. She received her license in esthetics, and in 1977, opened Klisar, the first day spa in Manhattan. In 1980, she launched the Repêchage treatments and products based on seaweed, opening the new Repêchage Spa de Beauté on Third Ave in 1986, and later in the Galleria building on 57th Street.

 

Sarfati was one of the pioneers in the field of esthetics in the U.S. setting the professional and business standards for the industry. She innovated spa services with the creation of the Facial Bar concept which allows salons and spas to incorporate express facial treatments with instant, visible results. Her skincare method is practiced by top estheticians around the world and is taught in over 200 schools in the US and globally; the Lydia Sarfati Post-Graduate Skin Care Academy located in Secaucus, offers master courses taught by Lydia once a year in addition to the advanced education classes available at the Academy on a monthly basis.

 

She appears nationally and internationally at esthetic trade shows, and attends and conducts overseas conferences in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Central America, and South Africa. She has produced 17 step-by-step instructional videos as well as published The Repêchage Professional Skin Care Methods and Protocols and The Lydia Sarfati Book of Skin Science, comprehensive works of skin conditions, skincare and body treatments, and medical esthetics including pre and post operative care protocols. She is a prolific writer, a contributing editor for Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa, Skin Inc. Magazine and European publications.  Sarfati is also author of “Success at Your Fingertips.” Written to help salon and spa professionals achieve professional success, it was published in the US in 2005, in Poland in 2014 and in Romania in the Fall, 2015. 

 

Ms. Sarfati was a founding President of the EMDA (Esthetics Manufacturer and Distributor Alliance), Vice President of American Beauty Association—now a part of Professional Beauty Association, a member of CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women), FGI (Fashion Group International), and is the honorary chairman of EstheticsAmerica/CIDESCO USA. Mrs. Sarfati is also an Honorary Mentor at Dietl University.

Sarfati was the recipient of both LNE’s Crystal Award and Dermascope’s Legend Award. She was granted the ICMAD’s Cosmetic Entrepreneur Award for Leadership and the NCA Pillar Award for Education Leadership. She was the first honoree from a skincare company to be recognized at the 19th Annual American Beauty Ball and Charity Gala benefitting The Make A Wish Foundation®. Lydia was honored at the Seventh Annual “Top Women in Business” Networking Awards Dinner presented by American Airlines. Lydia was presented with the prestigious Chevalerie “Knight Award” by Intercoiffure Mondial, the first and only skin care professional to be recognized by the organization for outstanding contributions to the industry.  Ms. Sarfati continues to promote education to professionals through-out the globe. In 2014, Sarfati was named Honorary Ambassador to Legnica, Poland, her home city, by the President of Legnica, Thadeusz Krzakowski.
